WHAT IS KRATOM?

Kratom is a tropical tree (Mitragyna speciosa) native to Southeast Asia and part of the coffee family of plants. The active compounds in Kratom leaves are primarily mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These compounds interact with opioid receptors in the brain, leading to effects that range from stimulation at lower doses to sedation at higher doses. Users often report that low doses can increase energy and enhance mood, while higher doses may produce relaxing and uplifting type effects.

THE HISTORY OF KRATOM (Thailand)

The history of Kratom in Thailand is complex and reflects broader regional patterns in Southeast Asia. The traditional use of Kratom in Thailand includes chewing the leaves for energy, particularly by farmers who use it as a boost to endure long hours of physical labor in the intense tropical heat.

Legal History

Despite its long history of use, Kratom has not always been viewed favorably by the Thai government. Concerns about its potential for abuse led to its criminalization:

• 1943: The Kratom Act: Thailand passed the Kratom Act 2486, which made planting the tree illegal and required existing trees to be cut down. This law was part of a broader effort to control numerous forms of drug use in Thailand.
• 1979: Thailand's Narcotics Act: Kratom was included in Category V of Thailand's Narcotics Act alongside cannabis and psychedelic mushrooms, reinforcing its illegal status.

Recent Developments
In recent years, there has been a significant shift in the legal status of Kratom in Thailand, largely influenced by changing perceptions of its potential benefits and economic value:

• 2018: The Thai government began to reconsider the legal status of Kratom, driven by the opioid crisis and new attitudes towards traditional and herbal medicines.
• 2021: Thailand legalized Kratom, removing it from the narcotics list.
